Why I’m focusing on Self Development for This Year

As the blog outlines, it was created for those of us who are naturally curious. That includes me. Over the years, my curiosity has consistently driven me to explore how I can improve. How can I be better at what I do? How can I be a better person? How am I progressing myself as an individual? Because if I’m not growing, what am I doing? So I want to be around that which inspires me to be better.

If I’m open and honest, I had been feeling as if there was a huge gap between my ideal self and my real self lately. Obviously it’s natural for there to be a gap so let me rephrase and say that there was more of a precipice…for so many reasons..but that’s for another blog. So I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts and reading a lot to identify the bridge that needs to be built to close that space.

Essentially, I’ve learnt that self development, the process of developing new skills, improving self-awareness or enhancing lifestyle, lends itself to fostering a sense of purpose and improves quality of life. So not a bad thing to commit myself to!

One of my personal goals or aims in life is to help others around me. Yet, as the familiar saying goes, much like in an airplane emergency where you must secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others, you cannot pour from an empty cup. So my focus for this year is to make sure I am setting aside time to fill my cup.

For me this looks like:

  • Promoting physical health and wellness through training for a 10K

  • Improving self awareness by spending time journaling and reading relevant literature

  • Promoting creative expression through writing

For everyone, their self-development journey will look different. I once listened to a podcast where the guest suggested RAG rating your skills to identify your areas of development. This is a great idea if you are stuck on your next steps and also if you love visuals!

For anyone else interested in embarking on a similar journey, I thought I would share some examples of the literature or podcasts that have encouraged me:

  • Podcast: Diary of a CEO

  • Podcast: Carolina Herrera Presents Walk Tall

  • Podcast: What Now? with Trevor Noah

  • Book: Courage to be Disliked

  • Book: Courage to be Happy

  • Book: Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway

There’s definitely more motivating content out there so please also share any that you find or have found helpful.

It’s important to note that, investing in ourselves isn’t a selfish act—it’s the cornerstone of genuine altruism. By nurturing our own growth, we become more capable of contributing positively to the world around us.
